CHICAGO - A Chicago felon has been sentenced to 28 months in federal prison after being caught with a handgun equipped with a device that allowed it to fire fully automatically.

What we know:
Antonio Lukes, 40, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a federal charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and was sentenced on Aug. 17.
The case stems from Sept. 12, 2025, when Chicago police officers spotted Lukes standing near an empty vehicle in the area of Jackson Boulevard and Western Avenue on the Near West Side.
Lukes had a handgun concealed in his waistband, prosecutors said. As officers drove past in their squad car, the gun fell from his waistband to the ground.
Lukes then ran from officers but was arrested after a brief chase, according to prosecutors.
The handgun was equipped with a "Glock switch," a conversion device that made the weapon capable of firing in fully automatic mode.

Lukes was already prohibited from possessing firearms because of multiple previous felony convictions.
Lukes has been arrested 11 times in Chicago since 2017, including on previous charges of possession of a controlled substance and aggravated assault/use of a deadly weapon.

"Defendant's crime is a serious one," Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Skiba said in the government's sentencing memorandum. "The Glock that defendant possessed that night was no ordinary firearm. The switch made a dangerous weapon even more dangerous still."
