CHICAGO - Chicago police are warning residents in the Morgan Park neighborhood about a ruse burglary pattern targeting senior citizens.

What we know:

The Chicago Police Department issued a community alert after reports of offenders using deceptive tactics to get inside residents’ homes. Police said the suspects may claim they are there to make home repairs, check electrical or plumbing systems, trim trees or perform other work on the property.

Ruse burglary offenders typically work in pairs, according to police. While one person distracts the victim, the other may enter through another door and steal cash, jewelry or other valuables.

Police are urging residents to be cautious when someone unexpectedly arrives at their door claiming to be a worker or contractor.

Warning signs include someone who:

• Cannot provide official identification or credentials.
• Has a vehicle with a missing or covered license plate.
• Parks a vehicle out of clear view.
• Wears an orange safety vest without a company name or markings.
• Insists that the work or request is urgent.

Area 2 detectives are investigating the reported burglaries.

Police are asking residents to stay alert, share the warning with family members and neighbors, and call 911 if they see suspicious behavior.
