A Lynwood man is facing a felony weapons charge after officers say they found a loaded gun with an extended magazine during a traffic stop in Harvey last week.

What we know:

The stop happened at around 8 p.m. Jan. 30 in the 100 block of West 159th Street, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers reportedly pulled over a Chevrolet Impala for a traffic violation. As an officer approached the vehicle, they said they smelled a strong odor of marijuana and saw what appeared to be burnt weed inside.

The driver, identified as 28-year-old Blake McGary, was asked to step out of the car so officers could search the vehicle for narcotics. During the search, officers said they recovered a loaded firearm equipped with an extended magazine.

Blake McGary

McGary did not have a FOID card or a concealed carry license, police said. He was then taken into custody.

Later that night, he was charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon.

What's next:

McGary was ordered released from custody following his first court appearance on Jan. 31. It remains unclear when he is due back in court.
