Passengers evacuated from CTA train derailment

Passengers evacuated from a train derailment.  A look at what happened. Joanie Lum has more on the travelers evacuated.

Due to a train derailment, CTA trains on the Red, Yellow and Purple lines have been suspended on Thursday in Rogers Park.

According to the Chicago Transportation Authority, as of 5:38 p.m., the Red, Yellow and Purple Line trains have been temporarily suspended as a train derailed at the Red Line Howard stop at 7519 N. Paulina Street.

A Yellow Line train derailed on the approach to Howard Station with two train cars appearing to lift off the tracks, ending up in angles.

The Red Line is affected from Howard and Thorndale. The Yellow Line is affected from Howard to Skokie in both directions. The Purple Line from Howard to Linden in both directions.

One hundred and fourteen people were evacuated from the derailed train. No injuries were reported, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Passengers could be seen standing at the open doors, as the temperature heated inside the train.

Many were Cubs fans, leaving the game at Wrigley Field. Shuttle buses lined up to get people going again.

It's unclear what led to this derailment.

What they're saying:

Emma Smith was riding in the train behind the derailed one. She said, "It became clear something was worse than it was, sirens happening, and the conductor came through and let us know what was going on."

Adrian Ayala-Perez said when he heard the sirens and helicopters his first reaction was concern, "I was worried someone got hurt, but fortunately the news report said no injuries."

CTA passengers didn’t know what happened to make train traffic stop in place for an hour and a half.

Jonathan Eig was on his way to Evanston. He said, "So we got stuck at the Jarvis station for like 90 minutes. They came and opened the windows because there was no air conditioning."

Abidemi Adeboje said, "If there’s an emergency, you just gotta get off and hope everyone’s OK."

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
