LUBBOCK, Texas (AP / FOX 26) - A Texas Tech University police officer has been shot and killed at the campus police headquarters. The suspect has been taken into custody and the university has issued an "all-clear message."
University spokesman Chris Cook says campus police conducted a student welfare check on Monday evening and found upon entering the room evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Cook says officers brought the suspect to the campus police station for standard debriefing.
During this time, Cook says the suspect pulled out a gun and shot an officer in the head, killing him. The suspect then fled on foot and has not been captured.
FOX 34 News identified the shooting suspect as Hollis Daniels.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott released the following statement:
First and foremost, our hearts go out to the family of the police officer killed at Texas Tech University. I have spoken to Chancellor Robert Duncan to offer my condolences, and I have mobilized the Texas Department of Public Safety to offer any assistance to the Lubbock Police Department. As the Texas Tech campus deals with this heartbreaking tragedy, Cecilia and I pray for the continued safety of the students and the entire community.
