End of an era: Harpo Studios demolition begins

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - It's officially the end of an era. The building that was once home to The Oprah Winfrey Show is coming down.

Crews have started demolition on Harpo Studios on Randolph Street.

McDonald's bought the land and will build its new world headquarters there.

The world's biggest hamburger chain signed a lease to move its corporate headquarters in 2018 from the leafy suburbs of Oak Brook, Illinois, to downtown Chicago.

Harpo Studios sold the site to developers in 2014 for more than $30 million. McDonald's was previously based in Chicago from 1955 to 1971.

The move will put McDonald's in Chicago's fast-growing West Loop neighborhood. Its corporate neighbors will include Google owner Alphabet Inc., which opened its Chicago offices there last year.
