McHenry County crash leaves man dead, 2 injured

SPRING GROVE, Ill. - A man died and two others were hurt in a car crash Friday evening in unincorporated Spring Grove.

The backstory:

The crash happened between two vehicles around 6:44 p.m. on Main Street, east of Villa Vista Street, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.

A Volvo and a Cadillac Escalade were traveling in opposite directions on Main Street when the Volvo crossed into the westbound lane as it was approaching a curve in the road. The front left sides of the vehicles struck each other in a head-on crash.

The Volvo came to a stop on the south shoulder area of the road and the Cadillac crashed into a ditch.

The driver of the Volvo, a 61-year-old man from Spring Grove, was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The McHenry County Coroner's Office has not yet released his identity.

The driver and passenger of the Cadillac were taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Air bags deployed in both vehicles but the driver of the Volvo was not wearing a seatbelt, officials said.

The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
