According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. during an undercover firearms trafficking operation.

ATF officials said an ATF special agent and a task force officer, who is a Chicago police officer, discharged their weapons after suspects allegedly attempted to rob undercover agents at gunpoint.

Two of the alleged offenders were struck by gunfire during the encounter, authorities said. Both were taken into custody and transported to area hospitals, where they were reported to be in stable condition.

Three additional suspects were apprehended at the scene.

The shooting prompted a large law enforcement response in the area of Loretto Lane. Investigators established multiple crime scenes as officers searched nearby lawns and backyards while expanding the perimeter.

A white sedan with Illinois license plates was identified as part of the investigation.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is also investigating because a Chicago police officer was involved in the shooting.
