VERSAILLES, Ky. (FOX 32 News/ AP) — The stabbing death of a kindergartner as he slept in his bed has plunged a Kentucky town into mourning after the arrest of a stranger, and shaken neighbors are rallying around the family.
Police say Logan Tipton was killed before dawn Monday when a knife-wielding intruder broke into his family's home in Versailles and stabbed the boy. According to a report from FOX 59, Logan's 11-year-old sister woke up during the attack, began screaming, and tried to fight off the suspect.
The children's father heard the scuffle and rushed into the bedroom. He was able to detain the suspect until police arrived on scene.
Thirty-two-year-old Ronald Exantus of Indianapolis has been charged with murder and first-degree burglary. He reportedly admitted to stabbing Logan during an interview with police authorities.
Authorities reported no motive even as neighbors raised funds online for the family, including funeral expenses.
Bridget Hofler, an attorney appointed for Exantus, says she questioned her client's mental competency. She said at his arraignment that he was unresponsive when she asked him about his background and family.
Little Logan loved to play football with friends, FOX 59 reports. He was a member of the Woodford Youth Football League. The team shared several photos on Facebook Monday saying, "Rest in peace baby Logan, we will miss you. You were small but fierce."
