ILLINOIS - Gov. J.B. Pritzker trolled President Donald Trump in a video Friday, joking that he would rename Lake Michigan to "Lake Illinois."
The move comes after Trump signed an executive order on Jan. 20 to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America."
What we know:
In a video shared on X, Pritzker said the Great Lake deserves a name fitting its status.
"I'm here today to make an important announcement. The world's finest geographers, experts who study the earth's natural environment have concluded a decades-long council and determined that a Great Lake deserves to be named after a great state," Gov. Pritzker said. "So today, I'm issuing a proclamation declaring hereinafter, Lake Michigan shall be known as Lake Illinois."
Pritzker, a frequent Trump critic, has spoken out against the former president’s immigration policies, sanctuary city lawsuits, federal funding freezes and more since he's taken office.
The governor also joked that Google Maps would reflect the name change.
"The proclamation has been forwarded to Google to ensure the world's maps reflect this momentous change."
Pritzker took it even further, saying Green Bay would be "annexed" by Illinois.
"In addition, the recent announcement that to protect the homeland, the United States will be purchasing Greenland. Illinois will now be annexing Green Bay to protect itself against enemies, foreign and domestic."
At the end of the video, Pritzker teased "an important announcement next week regarding the Mississippi River."
What's next:
While Pritzker's announcements were jokes, Trump’s efforts to rename the Gulf of Mexico are serious.
On Sunday, Trump issued a proclamation recognizing the first-ever Gulf of America Day, effective Feb. 9.
"I call upon public officials and all the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities," the proclamation reads.
Trump also announced he would visit the gulf Sunday for the first time since its renaming.
