Chicago officer killed, another critically wounded in hospital shooting: police

One Chicago police officer was killed and another critically wounded in a shooting at Swedish Hospital on the city’s North Side, authorities said.

What we know:

The shooting occurred about 10:50 a.m. after two Chicago police officers transported an individual to Swedish Hospital for observation, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said.

Both officers were shot. One officer was critically wounded and later pronounced dead, Snelling said. The second officer was hospitalized in critical condition.

Authorities have not released the officers’ identities. 

A spokesperson for Endeavor Health, which runs the hospital, said the hospital campus was closed due to the shooting.

They added the hospital was "not aware of any active threat within the hospital" and that patients and staff are safe.

2 Chicago police officers shot at North Side hospital, alder says

A shooting at Swedish Hospital on Chicago’s North Side left two officers shot, one critically wounded on Saturday.

At around 12:40 p.m., Vasquez's office said the suspect was in custody.

The alderman’s office said the incident was an active investigation and for those nearby to avoid the area.

Chicago police did not immediately respond to a request for information.
