President Donald Trump announced that he will send 5,000 U.S. troops to Poland weeks after he ordered the same number of forces to leave Europe.

Trump said in a social media post Thursday he would send "an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland," referencing his connections with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, whom Trump endorsed in elections in 2025.

The Associated Press reported that the Trump administration in early May stated that it was lowering levels in Europe by roughly 5,000 troops, and American officials corroborated that about 4,000 service members were no longer heading to Poland.

Trump’s change in stance came after weeks of statements he and his administration made regarding lowering the number of troops in Europe.

The initial order from Trump spurred action from military commanders and left allies questioning the United States commitment to Europe’s security.

U.S. has a commitment to keep roughly 76,000 troops in Europe

Dig deeper:

The Associated Press reported that roughly 80,000 U.S. troops are in Europe, and the Pentagon is required to keep at least 76,000 troops and major equipment in the country unless NATO allies are notified, and it's determined that a withdrawal is in U.S. interests.

Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski welcomed the decision to deploy more forces to his country, telling the AP that it assures that "the presence of American troops in Poland will be maintained more or less at previous levels."
