Chicago poet hopes to change the opera world
Chicago’s first Poet Laureate, Avery R. Young, debuts Sophronia — an operatic score rooted in his great-grandparents’ Great Migration story that blends gospel, blues, funk and soul. He says the work is meant to make opera more accessible and, in 2026, show that “something new happened” in the art form.
