Chicago weather: Dramatic temperature swing on the way

Some big swings are on the way this week.

Today, Chicago opens with some drizzle for a couple more hours and actual showers south of the Kankakee River. Skies will be mostly cloudy with mild temperatures climbing into the low to mid 50s.  Tonight will be mostly cloudy with temps falling through the 30s.

Tomorrow’s high will be whatever the midnight temperature is, likely upper 30s. The rest of Tuesday will be colder with temperatures slowly falling. Then the real cold attack loads up.

On Wednesday, highs will be in the upper 20s with a few flurries or perhaps a passing snow shower.  Snow isn’t the story. The cold is.

At night and through Thursday it will be positively frigid with wind chills between -10 and -20 degrees possible Thursday morning. High temps that day will only be in the teens.  This will be the coldest air we’ve had in Chicago since mid-January.

The arctic onslaught will be short-lived though. By Friday, highs should be around freezing with 40s on the way over the weekend. The warmup will be accompanied by some precipitation Friday night into Saturday. There could be some non-sticking snow at the onset but most of this will be in liquid form.
