18-year-old woman killed, man wounded in South Side drive-by shooting

A woman was killed and a man wounded in a drive-by shooting Tuesday evening in the South Side neighborhood of Gresham.

The two were standing on a corner at 5:23 p.m. in the 7900 block of South Paulina when people fired shots from a Nissan, according to Chicago police.

Dareyona L. Smith, 18, was struck in the chest and rushed to Christ Medial Center in Oak Lawn, where she was later pronounced dead, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Smith was a student at Ralph Ellison High School and was reportedly just hanging out with friends when she was shot, authorities said.

A 23-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his foot, police said. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

“I was standing right here on the corner of 79th and Paulina. They said a little girl just got off the bus and she got shot," one witness said. "She was no more than 18 years old, and another dude got shot, you know, it’s real sad."

As police continue to investigate, people living in this area of the city just want the violence to stop.

“It’s not okay to take people’s lives, and they’re innocent children, they don’t deserve this," a neighbor said.
