CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago's city council has approved an ordinance that will help move Union Station into a next phase of upgrades.

Aldermen during last week gave the thumbs-up to a measure that authorizes an intergovernmental agreement between the Chicago Department of Transportation, Metra, the Regional Transportation Authority and Amtrak.

Among the improvements foreseen in the near term are ones expanding the train station's concourse and platforms.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says it's all part of what he calls an "ambitious plan to modernize Union Station." He says the city wants to "tap the potential" of the station and make it "an anchor" for economic development.
