CHICAGO - Three teenagers were charged in connection with a deadly stabbing Sunday morning in the Loop.
What we know:
The attack happened just after 7:20 a.m. in the 200 block of South Wabash Avenue where an unidentified man was found unresponsive with a puncture wound to his body, according to police.
He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office classified his death as a homicide and said that he died of a stab wound in the back. He has not been identified, but prosecutors said he was 49 years old.
On Monday night, three teens were charged in connection with the stabbing.
Two boys, 14 and 16, were charged with first-degree murder, with the older teen also facing one felony count of mob action. Another 14-year-old boy was charged with armed robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Court records identified the 16-year-old as Wuinayker Rodriguez-Vasquez, of Venezuela. The identities of the other juveniles involved were not disclosed.
FOX 32 Chicago reached out to the Cook County State's Attorney to verify that Rodriguez-Vazquez will be tried as an adult. We have not yet heard back.
Prosecutors said the suspects found the victim laying down in an alcove while they were walking around 5:45 a.m. The victim was lying next to his cat and skeleton mask.
The suspects approached the victim, one holding a metal rod and another holding a knife in his sleeve. One of the suspects took the mask and ran away while another kicked the victim.
The suspects then hit the victim with the metal rod and stabbed him in the left side of his back, prosecutors said. In court documents, the victim was described as "vulnerable, defenseless, and randomly targeted" and that he was attacked "for no apparent reason."
The suspects fled southbound on Wabash Avenue and eventually boarded a CTA train at the Cermak Station.
The attack was captured on surveillance footage.
A witness passing by the area where the victim was found his lifeless body and called 911.
Around 4 p.m. that afternoon, officers found the suspects near 2600 W. Cermak Road and took them into custody. One of the suspects was wearing similar clothing as he was seeing wearing on CTA surveillance and private surveillance video, prosecutors said.
A detention hearing for the teens will be held Tuesday.
