Teen charged in fatal shooting of 12-year-old Chicago girl

A teenage boy has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old girl Sunday night in the Calumet Heights neighborhood.

The backstory:

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. inside a home in the 9200 block of South Harper Avenue, according to police.

The girl was hit by gunfire inside the home and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital where she later died. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified her as Dalilah Batey.

The 14-year-old boy was arrested less than two hours after the shooting. He was charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter.

The boy has not been identified because he is being charged as a juvenile.
