CPS announces proposed school closings, consolidations

Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Chicago Public School officials want to combine several schools and close two others in order to save money. CPS CEO Forrest Claypool announced the proposed changes Tuesday

Part of the proposed changes include plans to close the Marine Military Math and Science Academy and Montefiore Special Elementary School. Neither school has any students enrolled currently.

Ten other schools would be combined, including the Kipp Charter School moving into space in Orr High School in West Garfield Park.

Claypool said the changes will make better use "the schools' limited resources." Each move will be presented at public hearings. Then, the school board could vote on the changes as soon as February.
