Georgia soldier killed in training exercise at Fort Campbell

ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. - The soldier killed in an accident Wednesday afternoon at Fort Campbell has been identified by the Department of Defense.

Pvt. 2nd Class Jeremy J. Wells, 19, of Adairsville, Georgia died as a result of a training incident around 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to the U.S. Army. The circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation, but an Army spokesperson said Wells was conducting weapons training at a small-arms range when something went wrong. He was rushed to Blanchfield Army Community Hospital where he later died. No other injuries were reported.

"101st Combat Aviation Brigade has lost an incredible member of the Destiny family.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members of this Soldier," Lt. Col. Cayton Johnson, commander, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade (Rear), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) was quoted as saying in a release obtained by FOX 5 News. "We ask that everyone respect the privacy of his family as they grieve this tragic loss."

Wells joined the Army in 2018 and trained at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Fort Eustis, Virginia before arriving to Fort Campbell earlier this year. He was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Basic Aviation Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal.
