Large pothole on I-80 prompts emergency lane closure
A lane of Interstate 80 has been closed for emergency repairs of a large pothole, prompting a bottleneck on the expressway.
JOLIET, Ill. - A lane of Interstate 80 is closed for emergency repairs to a large pothole, prompting a bottleneck on the expressway in Joliet.
The closure could extend into early Tuesday morning.
What we know:
The Illinois Department of Transportation reported Monday morning that the right lane of eastbound Interstate 80 was closed near Center Street because of a large pothole. Drivers were advised to take alternate routes to avoid the area.
Officials said heavy congestion is expected because the concrete will need time to set and stabilize before the lane can reopen.
There is no impact to westbound lanes on Interstate 80.
In an update Monday afternoon, IDOT said additional time is needed to complete the emergency repairs. The work is expected to be finished and the lane reopened by 5 a.m., weather permitting.
However, the closure could last longer depending on how long the concrete takes to set, which could delay reopening.
I-80 bridge inspections
Big picture view:
Inspections of I-80 bridges over the Des Plaines River began Monday. The closures will be in effect between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and Saturdays, if necessary.
IDOT officials said a minimum of one lane in both directions will remain open during inspections.
