What we know:

The single-engine Piper PA-18 Super Cub aircraft landed in a grassy area of McDonough Street and Infantry Drive after experiencing an apparent mechanical malfunction on Thursday at 5:14 p.m., according to Joliet police.

The 21-year-old male pilot said that the plane began to fail mid-flight, prompting the emergency landing near the Inwood Golf Course. The plane was towing a promotional banner during the flight, which was released prior to landing. The banner was recovered in the 2600 block of West Jefferson Street.

No injuries were reported, although minor damage was caused to a section of the Joliet Park District fence.

Authorities urged drivers in the area to use caution due to intermittent lane closures as emergency crews responded to the scene.
