Man accused of firing gun from underground Chicago CTA station up toward State Street

A man is in custody after allegedly firing a gun from a restricted area at an underground CTA Red Line stop up toward busy State Street on Monday morning.

A man is in custody after allegedly firing a gun from a restricted area of a CTA Red Line subway stop toward State Street during Monday’s morning commute in downtown Chicago.

What we know:

The incident happened around 8:07 a.m. in the 100 block of North State Street, according to Chicago police.

Officers said 24-year-old Rayvon Savary entered a restricted part of the Red Line station and fired shots upward toward State Street, aiming at a 30-year-old man and a 48-year-old man who were walking on the sidewalk. No injuries were reported.

Chicago police said Savary was arrested at the scene and faces multiple charges, including:

  • One felony count of aggravated discharge of a firearm
  • One felony count of unlawful use of a weapon
  • One citation for trespassing on CTA property
  • One citation for creating unsafe conditions or obstructing access
  • One citation for possession of a weapon on CTA property

A firearm was also recovered at the scene. 

What we don't know:

Authorities have not said how the man got into the restricted area or provided more details on the incident.

What's next:

Savary is due back in court for a detention hearing on Wednesday.
