A man attempting to walk his bike through a Near West Side intersection late Saturday was fatally struck by a vehicle.

About 11:40 p.m., a 53-year-old man walking with his bike was attempting to cross Western at Congress when he was struck by a 2014 Kia SUV heading south on Western, police said.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he later died, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatality, but could not provide more details.

The driver of the SUV, a 58-year-old man, stayed on the scene, police said. He was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Witnesses told police that the pedestrian was trying to cross the street against traffic, and that the SUV’s driver tried to swerve but could not avoid the man in time, according to a source.
