Speeding driver killed after crashing into traffic pole in South Elgin, police say

A driver was killed after his vehicle crashed into a traffic light pole in South Elgin Tuesday evening, authorities said.

What we know:

The crash happened at 5:20 p.m. at Stearns Road and South McLean Boulevard.

A Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling west on Stearns at a high rate of speed when it struck the pole at the intersection, according to South Elgin police.

The vehicle was heavily damaged and the driver, a man, was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. 

The man's identity has not been released. 

Roads in the area were closed for more than three hours after the crash.

What's next:

The Kane County Coroner’s Office is conducting a death investigation. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
