Tesla recall reveals stunningly low sales for Cybertrucks

Sales for the rear-wheel drive Cybertruck model have dwindled in part based on a recall involving a defective brake problem that could result in the wheels potentially falling off.
The recent recall of this model Cybertruck, in part, could explain why the rear-wheel drive version didn’t generate the type of consumer demand Tesla anticipated.

In 2025, Tesla launched the rear-wheel-drive version of the Cybertruck, marketing the vehicle to the public as a more affordable model compared to the automaker’s base all-wheel drive Cybertruck.

Tesla’s recall covers 173 Cybertrucks with 18-inch wheels that may have faulty brake rotors that may result in the wheel becoming detached.
According to MotorTrend, the holes for the wheel studs in the rotor can start to crack, placing stress on the hub assembly when driving around a curve.

If the driver isn’t aware of the cracking, this may lead to complete failure, resulting in the wheel studs to separate from the Cybertrucks hub and the wheel coming off.
Tesla service centers stocked the same rotors, meaning the defect can show up after repairs. The replacement rotors were installed for similar cracking, occasionally after consumers reported unusual brake vibrations.
According to MotorTrend, recall notices were mailed to owners on April 24, and remedy notification letters are not expected to be distributed until June 20.
Owners of the affected Cybertrucks can take them to their local dealership to receive repairs for free.
