United flight bound for Chicago diverted to Ireland

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - A United Airlines flight from Rome to Chicago was diverted to Ireland due to a "potential security concern," the airline said Monday.

United Flight 971 was diverted to Shannon, Ireland where passengers and their baggage were being screened again, a statement from the airlines said.

"We will work to get customers on their way to Chicago as quickly as possible," the statement went on to say.

The flight was originally scheduled to land at O'Hare International Airport at 5:35 p.m.

No further details were made available.
