All of the living former U.S. presidents were in Washington for the funeral of Jimmy Carter, a rare scene that included moments of both levity and gravitas.

The life and legacy of former President Jimmy Carter is being remembered Thursday with a national funeral service and a National Day of Mourning. 

Former President Jimmy Carter from Plains, Georgia, died on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Rosalynn Carter, on Jan. 9 in Plains.

“Twice today our officers stopped a man who could have been a danger to the Capitol Hill community," said U.S. Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger. “This vigilance is critical during this time of heightened security."

President Joe Biden signed an executive order Monday closing executive departments and agencies of the federal government on January 9 for the late former President Jimmy Carter's funeral. 

The Postal Service will suspend regular mail delivery, retail services and office activity on Jan. 9.
