Two people were killed and three others were seriously injured in a crash late Thursday night on the Veterans Memorial Tollway in Downers Grove.

A blue Volkswagen Jetta was driving the wrong way at 10:53 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-355 near milepost 18.75, according to Illinois State Police. The Jetta then hit a black Honda Accord head-on, causing a multi-vehicle crash that also involved a white Ford box truck and a silver Subaru.

The driver of the Jetta, 36-year-old Robert Velazco of Hammond, Indiana, was dead at the scene, state police said. The driver of the Honda, 32-year-old Arshad Mohammed of Bloomingdale, was pronounced dead at a hospital at 6 a.m. Friday.

The 66-year-old woman driving the Subaru and her passenger, a 66-year-old man, were both taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, state police said. They both live in Glendale Heights.

A 24-year-old Brookfield man, who was riding in the Jetta with Velazco, was also hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to state police. The driver of the truck was not hurt.

All northbound lanes of I-355 were closed after the crash, but they reopened by 4 a.m. Friday, state police said.
