2 killed, 1 hurt in shooting, crash on I-57

CALUMET PARK (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Two people were killed and another was injured when a vehicle sustained gunfire and crashed Monday night on Interstate 57 near south suburban Calumet Park, closing all northbound lanes of traffic until about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Someone fired gunshots from one vehicle into the driver’s side of another vehicle about 7:55 p.m. on I-57 near 123rd Street, according to Illinois State Police. The vehicle the victims were in then left the roadway and struck a pole.

Three of that vehicle’s four occupants were taken to hospitals. One was pronounced dead at University of Chicago Medical Center, another died at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and the third was treated and released from Christ, according to state police. The fourth person in the vehicle was not hurt.

State police would not release the ages or genders of the victims or say whether they were shot or injured in the crash.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the two who were killed as 25-year-old Parrish Myles Jr. of Markham and 25-year-old Gerald Glover of the Burnside neighborhood.

An autopsy Tuesday found Myles died of multiple gunshot wounds, the medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy on Glover Wednesday found he also died of multiple gunshot wounds. Both deaths were ruled homicides.

The vehicle the shots were fired from also crashed after the shooting and three males got out and ran away, state police said. They remained at large Tuesday morning.

All northbound lanes of I-57 were closed and traffic was diverted at 127th Street until 1 a.m. when all lanes reopened, sate police said. No further information was immediately made available.

The shooting was the second to close the expressway since last week.

On Friday, a shooting led to the closure of all northbound lanes. At least a dozen shell casings littered the road as state police shut down nearly 10 blocks of the expressway to investigate a report of shots fired near the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

A driver called police at 1:48 a.m. to report that he’d been merging onto northbound I-57 from 127th Street when someone fired at his car from another vehicle, according to Illinois State Police.

The car was shot multiple times, but neither the driver nor his passenger was hurt, state police said.

The expressway was closed from 127th Street to 119th Street until about 5:40 a.m. as authorities investigated, state police said.
