25,000+ sign petition to jail lawmaker who wished for Trump's assassination
FOX NEWS - Americans are firing back at a Missouri state senator who said she hoped President Trump would be assassinated.
State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D) wrote "I hope Trump is assassinated" in an August 17 post on her Facebook page. She initially refused to apologize, but did so four days later.
A petition to remove Chappelle-Nadal from office and jail her for threatening the president has garnered more than 26,335 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon.
"We cannot allow someone such as a State Senator who knowingly knew her position, took it for granted and used that to say whatever she wanted against our current President of the United States," the petition states.
Chappelle-Nadal later apologized, saying, "I didn’t mean what I put up. Absolutely not. I was very frustrated. Things have got to change."
Democrats have roundly condemned Chappelle-Nadal, including state Rep. Joshua Peters, D-St. Louis, who formally requested that she be removed and called her “an embarrassment nationally for the Missouri General Assembly.”
