90-year-old blind woman battered and robbed in Gary

A 90-year-old blind woman was battered and robbed outside her northwest Indiana home earlier this month, and police are asking the public for help in finding the culprit.

About 9:25 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, the woman was dragged from her home in the 700 block of Hovey Street in Gary, then battered and robbed, according to Gary Police Lt. Dawn Westerfield.

She was treated by paramedics at the scene, Westerfield said.

The suspect fled before police arrived, she said. He was described as a black man in his early 20s, about 6-foot with an average build, and wearing a light blue shirt and basketball pants.

Anyone with information should call Det. Sgt. Daniel Callahan at (219) 881-1210, or the crime tip line at (866) 274-6347.
