Supreme Court restores broad access to abortion pill

On Monday, the Supreme Court restored broad access to the abortion pill mifepristone. The order allows women seeking abortion to receive the pill at pharmacies or through the mail without a visit to the doctor. A federal appeals court had imposed new restrictions last week.

The Supreme Court restored broad access Monday to the abortion pill mifepristone.

The restored access can come by way of telehealth, mail and pharmacies.

Supreme Court abortion pill decision

The backstory:

Last week, a federal appeals court ruled mifepristone must be dispensed in person, blocking mail delivery. Louisiana had sued to restrict access to mifepristone, saying its availability undermined the ban there.

The ruling upended one of the main ways abortion is provided across the country.

Most abortions are obtained with medication, normally mifepristone and a second drug, misoprostol.

Presently:

The Supreme Court on Monday restored broad access to the pill.

The order signed by Justice Samuel Alito temporarily allows women seeking abortions to obtain the pill at pharmacies or through the mail, without an in-person visit to a doctor.

Manufacturers of mifepristone filed emergency appeals asking the Supreme Court to step in.

What's next:

Alito's order will remain in effect for another week while both sides respond and the court more fully considers the issue.
