CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago father charged after his 3-year-old son was fatally shot by his 6-year-old brother is due back in court next month.

Cook County prosecutors say 25-year-old Michael Santiago briefly appeared in court on Friday and a Nov. 9 hearing date was set.

Santiago was released Monday on $75,000 bail. He is charged with felony child endangerment in Saturday night's shooting that killed his youngest son, Eian Santiago.

Police said the two boys were playing when the older boy reached on top of the refrigerator and grabbed a loaded handgun and then accidentally shot the younger boy in the face.

Prosecutors say Santiago was a former gang member and bought the gun in a street sale because he felt he needed it for protection.
