Chicago Police: 10-month-old boy dies after DUI crash on I-290

SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - A West Side woman was drunk when she stopped her car in traffic on the Eisenhower Expressway early Sunday, causing a crash that killed a 10-month-old boy in her vehicle, Illinois State Police allege.

Bond was denied Wednesday for 38-year-old Shante Nelson, who faces a felony charge of aggravated DUI, according to Cook County Circuit Court records. The infant, Tejay King Hughes Jr., died at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood at 2:32 a.m. Tuesday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Tejay was not secured in a proper safety seat in Nelson’s Hyundai Elantra, which was stopped in the right lane of eastbound Interstate 290 near Desplaines Avenue about 3:20 a.m., state police said. That’s when a minivan slammed into the back of the car.

The boy, who lived in the 1800 block of Grove Avenue in Berwyn, had been on life support since the crash, authorities said.

Nelson, of the 5500 block of West Van Buren, was charged Monday and remained hospitalized at the Cook County Jail Wednesday night, records show. Authorities have not specified her relationship to Tejay.

The 50-year-old man driving the minivan was also taken to a hospital, state police said. His condition was not released.

Nelson has another court date Thursday, records show.
