Child found hungry, crying, and in waste while two accompanying adults were passed out from opiates

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office posted onto Facebook that a child was placed into the care of the Department of Children and Families after being found in the backseat of a car with two passed out adults.

Police say that around 3:15 a.m., Deputy Lewis noticed a parked car in a Circle K (on New York Ave in DeLand) parking lot sitting with its driver door open. Inside was a male driver and female front-seat passenger, who were unconscious. The windows of the vehicle were also fogged up, indicating the vehicle had been sitting for an extended amount of time.

The deputy on scene says she saw an infant child, about 8-months-old, asleep in a car seat in the rear middle passenger seat. The child was sweating profusely.

The deputy woke both adults up and the baby began crying while she spoke with them, according to the post. It was clear to the deputy that the baby had not had her diaper changed in some time as the diaper was saturated with fluids and was leaking from the diaper edges around the legs. The car seat was also saturated with fluids from the diaper, indicating the diaper had been leaking for an extended period of time. The baby also seemed hungry, as she reached for an empty bottle.

Police say the adult female passenger was confused and could not identify where she was located. She even could not spell her name due to her level of impairment. She was placed under arrest for child neglect. A search revealed a clear plastic baggie with white residue in her left front pocket. The residue was a tested and found positive for the presence of opiates. She was charged with possession of opiates and later transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail.

The male driver had full control of the vehicle and the key in the ignition, so they deputy reported that she placed him under arrest for driving while license suspended. The deputy also had observed track marks on the driver's inner arms, indicating intravenous drug use. A search revealed a spent syringe in his left front pocked, which upon testing, was found positive for presence of opiates. He was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and later transported to jail.
