Cook County Jail guard attacked by inmate Friday

SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - A guard at the Cook County Jail was attacked Friday night by an inmate and punched several times.
About 9 p.m., the guard was trying to secure an inmate in a cell in the maximum security, Division 9 section of the jail, according to Cara Smith, spokeswoman for the Cook County sheriff’s office. When the guard went to close the cell door, he was attacked.
The guard was punched multiple times in the head and face, Smith said. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Charges are expected against the inmate, who was in custody for a gun offense, Smith said.
The attack came a day after two inmates, identified as Martin Alvarado and Cordarryl Stevenson, took over a housing tier at the jail while holding another inmate hostage about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Smith.
The 18-man tier was put on lockdown until correctional officers were able to regain control by 7:30 p.m., Smith said. The detainee who was taken hostage suffered a minor leg injury and was taken to a hospital. No officers were hurt.
