KKK recruitment card found on windshield in Shepherd

It may not shock you when you return to your car and find a flier on it, but you would be surprised if it was a recruitment attempt from the Ku Klux Klan. That's exactly what happened to a man in San Jacinto County.

Back in May, the man, who did not want to be identified, spoke with FOX 26 News and said he was leaving the convenience store of a Chevron fuel station when he found the card belonging to the Original Texas Rebel Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The card had a P.O. Box in the southeast Texas town of Shepherd -- something that has not happened in this city for decades, leaving many residents shocked.

"Because you don't think it's going to happen here, because you feel invincible that it's going to happen somewhere else, but it's pretty spooky," says Shepherd-area resident Lisa Molina. 

The owner of the car uploaded a photo of the card onto his Facebook page, but it wasn't until after the incident in Charlottesville, Virginia that the post finally caught the attention of residents, which prompted them to involve the mayor.

"It may be valid, it may not be valid, but as mayor I'm supposed to...citizens come forward with something I'm supposed to follow up and do what I was elected for." said Shepherd Mayor Earl Brown. The mayor then contacted the San Jacinto Precinct 2 Constable's Office about the incident.

Pct. 2 Constable Pippin issued this statement:

...no criminal offense has been committed and the situation will continue to be monitored to ensure that...Although the Ku Klux Klan has been known to have a Chapter in Shepherd for several years, in my experience with First Responders for the past 20 years, 13 of those years in Law Enforcement in San Jacinto County and in Precinct 2, I have never had any encounters with the Ku Klux Klan or any activist group.

So far, this appears to be an isolated incident, but the Pct. 2 Constable's Office will be monitoring for any other recruitment attempts.
