1 killed, 2 hurt after speeding car drives off Chicago area roadway

A person was killed after their speeding car drove off the roadway and landed near a creek near southwest suburban Lemont on Wednesday morning, according to police.

Lemont police initially responded to the scene at 135th Street about a quarter-mile west of Archer Avenue for the crash that happened a little after 2 a.m., according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

The area is actually under the sheriff’s office's jurisdiction, so county police took over the investigation.

What we know:

Police said initial reports indicated a single car went off the roadway and into the retention pond.

There were three occupants in the car at the time, police said.

Homer Fire Department personnel were at the scene extricating the 34-year-old male driver and front seat passenger, a 36-year-old man). The front seat passenger died.

The Will County Coroner's Office identified the passenger as Sameer S. Gowani, of Lisle.

The backseat passenger, a 33-year-old man, was ejected from the car and was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove in critical condition. 

The driver was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. His condition was stabilized.

Sky Fox was over the scene around 7 a.m. when the car appeared to be out of the water with severe damage. It appeared to be a dark-colored sedan. Police said it ws a Tesla Model 3.

A driver was killed after their car crashed into a retention pond in southwest suburban Lemont on Wednesday morning, according to police.

County police said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control as it was coming into a curve. It crossed over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, struck the curb on the north side of the road and went airborne, landing in a grassy area.

The car then continued in a northeast direction over a raise median and hit another curb before going down the embankment. It went over a nearby creek until it came to a rest on the east side of the creek.

What we don't know:

No charges have been filed for the driver but police are reviewing the matter.
