CHICAGO (STMW) - A 19-year-old Loyola University student was shot and critically wounded Friday night in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

About 9:15 p.m., she was walking with friends to a store in the 6700 block of North Clark when someone fired shots from a passing vehicle, according to Chicago Police.

The woman was shot in the lower back and taken in critical condition to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. In an alert posted on Loyola’s website, the university confirmed she is a student and said she was recovering from her injuries.

A gray Nissan Altima was seen speeding away from the scene of the shooting, according to police, who said the woman was not the intended target.

In the wake of the shooting, Loyola has added additional vans for its 8-RIDE student shuttle service for Saturday night, the university said. Counseling services are also being made available for students who want to talk about the incident or other concerns.
