New Chicago house fire leaves elderly woman dead
NEW CHICAGO - An elderly woman died in a fire that engulfed her home Wednesday evening in New Chicago, Indiana.
The backstory:
The fire started around 8 p.m. at a residence located at 425 McKinley Ave., according to Hobart fire officials.
Upon arrival, New Chicago first responders encountered heavy smoke billowing from the building and a lack of accessible entry points.
Officers called the Hobart Fire Department to the scene and firefighters successfully gained access to the residence and located an elderly woman inside.
Firefighters removed the woman from the burning building and administered first aid, including CPR. She was then taken to Saint Mary's Hospital in Hobart but was later pronounced dead.
The Lake County Coroner's Office has not yet released her identity.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
