Police: 5 dead, 36 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings
SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - Five men were killed and at least 36 others were wounded in shootings across the city between Friday evening and Monday morning, police said.
The most recent fatal shooting happened Sunday night in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. Two men, ages 22 and 24, were in a vehicle at 9:08 p.m. stopped at a stop sign in the 1700 block of North Mayfield when a group of males on foot began shooting, according to Chicago Police. The younger man was shot in the face and back and was pronounced dead at the scene. The older man was shot in the elbow and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
At 7:54 p.m. Sunday, a 22-year-old man was shot to death in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. He was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest on a porch in the 3900 block of West Gladys. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the fatalities.
Early Sunday, an Indiana man was fatally shot in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Rolando Gamino, 30, was in an argument with another male about 4:20 a.m. in the 3100 block of South Central Park when the suspect pulled out a handgun and opened fire, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. He was shot in the chest and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:34 a.m. Gamino lived in the 5000 block of Baring Avenue in East Chicago, Indiana.
About 20 minutes earlier, a man was killed in a shooting that left another man wounded in the South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood. The men were standing outside at 3:58 a.m. in the 4800 block of South Bishop when someone in a vehicle fired shots, authorities said. Victor Sanjuanero, 25, was shot in the armpit, while a 32-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the right leg and buttocks. They were both taken to Stroger Hospital, where Sanjuanero, who lived in the 4800 block of South Throop, was pronounced dead at 5:32 a.m. The older man’s condition was stabilized.
About 1:35 p.m. Saturday, a 30-year-old man was gunned down in another East Garfield Park neighborhood attack. Martell Rhodes was walking in the 3800 block of West Huron when someone fired shots from a dark vehicle, authorities said. Rhodes, of the 4900 block of West Englewood, was shot in the abdomen and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m., authorities said.
The weekend’s latest nonfatal shooting happened about 5:30 a.m. Monday in the Albany Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. A 32-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the right side of his head and right arm in the 2900 block of West Montrose, police said. He drove himself to Swedish Covenant Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
At least 33 more people were wounded in shootings across Chicago between 6:30 p.m. Friday and 12:30 a.m. Monday. Forty-four people were shot in Chicago last weekend.
