Soundproof windows possibly releasing dangerous chemicals into homes near Midway

First the problem was noise from Midway Airport. But now, residents say soundproof windows installed as part of a city program are causing even more serious trouble, possibly releasing dangerous chemicals into their homes. 

To keep out the sound of noisy jets, Pam Zadarich first welcomed new windows -- until she says she noticed an overwhelming smell.

“I'm sure there are people that have been like me walking around their house for a year..like me...thinking what is that smell..where is that coming from. I never thought in a million years it was going to be my windows,” Zadarich said.

On Thursday Zadarich and other frustrated residents packed a meeting of the Midway Noise Compatibility Commission, venting about their windows.

They say the vinyl windows let off a strong smell when the sun shines on them.

"I have children at home... one of my rooms is unbelievable...you can't even step in there,” said Annette Blaylock.

Barbara Gabka says she worries her windows could be releasing dangerous chemicals.

The noise commission plans to work with the Chicago Department of Aviation - hoping to get the windows tested inside the homes and in a lab setting.

The city has agreed to remove the windows, but with a catch. Residents have to sign a release -- agreeing not to sue in the future.
