‘The hot dog is a sandwich' according to Merriam Webster

In honor of this Memorial Day weekend, the people at Merriam Webster decided to stoke the fire in people’s debate grill by claiming the hot dog is a sandwich.

“We know: the idea that a hot dog is a sandwich is heresy to some of you. But given that the definition of sandwich is 'two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between,' there is no sensible way around it,” the dictionary's editors wrote in a list of 10 kinds of, well, sandwiches.

According to a post on their website, a sandwich is defined as "two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between."  Therefore, by definition, a hot dog is a sandwich.

According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans eat 7 billion hot dogs.
