Suburban man accidentally shot and killed friend before fatally shooting himself: police

A death investigation is underway in Waukegan after two men were found shot to death blocks away from each other Sunday night.

What we know:

At about 7:18 p.m., the Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded to the 1900 block of West Greenwood Avenue for a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they located a 28-year-old man who had been shot inside a vehicle.

He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified him as Leobardo Diaz, of Waukegan.

Later that evening, police were notified of a second person with an apparent gunshot wound, who had been found in the yard of a residence in the 1700 block of West Greenwood Avenue.

When officers and paramedics responded to the scene, they located a 31-year-old man who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified him as Fredi Aquilar Carrasco, of Waukegan.

Autopsies were conducted on Monday for the two men. Preliminary results indicate that Diaz died from a gunshot wound to the back and Aquilar Carrasco died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Officers conducted interviews and learned that there were four people inside the vehicle when the shooting occurred.

It was determined that Aquilar Carrasco shot Diaz in the vehicle, fled the scene on foot and then shot himself in a nearby area.

Witnesses inside the vehicle said the group was driving around looking to buy cocaine when Aquilar Carrasco shot into the front driver's seat at Diaz.

The passengers then stated that they were all friends and that there was no argument prior to the shooting, speculating that it was accidental, the Waukegan Police Department said.

The two passengers were released pending any further developments.
