She was arrested at 3:54 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, in the 5100 block of South Wentworth Avenue.

Police said Bell's arrest stemmed from an incident about three hours earlier inside an apartment in the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue.

According to court documents, Bell left a loaded 9 mm Glock in her purse and hid the bag under a pile of toys and clothing in her brother’s room while she took a shower.

Police said the child found the gun and shot himself in the head. Bell heard the gunshot and found the child on his bedroom floor with a gunshot wound, according to the documents.

Bell called 911 to report the incident. The boy was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

Documents said Bell had a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card at the time of the shooting and had purchased the gun from an Illinois retailer in the spring.

Police later recovered the weapon and Bell was taken into custody.
