PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois House has passed a resolution to rename part of U.S. Route 24 in central Illinois after retired Chicago White Sox star Jim Thome.
Thome is a native of Peoria. The resolution that passed 96-0 would designate the roadway Jim Thome Highway between Bartonville and Peoria. The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that the House voted on Tuesday and the measure now goes to the Illinois Senate.
Peoria Democratic state Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth sponsored the legislation.
Thome had 612 career home runs. He grew up in Peoria, graduated from high school in Bartonville and attended Illinois Central College.
