17-year-old Marmion Academy student dies after falling off SUV

A 17-year-old Marmion Academy student has died three days after he fell off an SUV in the school’s parking lot in west suburban Aurora.

Stephen J. Woodcock was riding on the passenger side running board and holding on to the exterior of an Acura MDX in Marmion Academy’s parking lot in the 1000 block of Butterfield Road about 3:45 p.m. Friday when he lost his grip, according to a statement from Aurora police.

The 18-year-old driver of the Acura said he was driving about 10 miles per hour when he took a left turn, causing Woodcock to fall backwards off the vehicle and hit his head on the pavement, police said.

Woodcock, of the 4N300 block of Booth Tarkington Street in St. Charles, was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he died Monday, police said.

The driver, who is also a Marion student, was not impaired but was cited for reckless driving, police said. The investigation is ongoing, and other charges have not been ruled out.

“Marmion is deeply saddened by the death of senior Stephen Woodcock,” the academy posted on its Facebook page Monday afternoon. “He was greatly loved by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Stephen at this time of loss.”
