9-year-old boy, woman killed; 7 others shot on South, West sides
CHICAGO (STMW) - A 9-year-old boy and 20-year-old woman were killed and at least seven other people were wounded in shootings on the South and West sides since late Monday afternoon.
Tyshawn Lee was shot in an alley in the 8000 block of South Damen at 4:15 p.m., authorities said.
At a news conference at Chicago Police headquarters Monday night, Dean Andrews, the chief of detectives, said the boy had multiple gunshot wounds in his upper body.
Andrews said an unknown number of people were arguing in the alley and gunfire followed.
“At this point it is unclear if this was a targeted incident or a tragic case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said.
Tyshawn, who lived in the 2000 block of West 80th Street, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:39 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The boy’s grandmother, who did not want her name used, said she saw his body lying in the alley.
About two hours later, an north suburban woman was killed and a 15-year-old boy was critically wounded in an Englewood neighborhood drive-by shooting on the South Side
Kaylyn Pryor, 20, was standing outside with the boy in the 7300 block of South May about 6:20 p.m. when someone in a passing vehicle shot them, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.
Pryor, who lived in the 400 block of Callan Avenue in Evanston, was shot in the armpit and pronounced dead at 7:01 p.m., authorities said.
The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the groin, police said. He was listed in critical condition.
The most recent nonfatal shooting occurred about 9:30 p.m. in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.
Two men and one woman were outside after a gathering in the 3300 block of West Van Buren when they were shot, police said.
One man, 21, was shot in both legs, police said. He took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital. The other man, 29, and woman, 21, took themselves to Rush University Medical Center, police said. The man was shot in the buttocks and the woman was shot in the leg. Their conditions had all stabilized.
At 7:15 p.m., a 24-year-old man was standing outside in the 700 block of North Leamington Avenue when the shooter or shooters walked up, fired shots and ran away, police said.
The man suffered a gunshot wound to the right arm and was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
Two men were wounded in a possible drive-by shooting in the 10500 block of South Michigan Avenue at 4:51 p.m., police said.
A 58-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said.
A 21-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks and back, and was taken to Christ Medical Center in serious condition, police said.
