Husband of Caitlin Tracey sentenced for Michigan domestic abuse case

The husband of Caitlin Tracey, the woman who was found dead in a South Loop condo stairwell nearly a year ago, was sentenced in a separate domestic abuse case in a Michigan courthouse on Monday.

The husband of Caitlin Tracey, the woman who was found dead in a South Loop condo stairwell nearly a year ago, was sentenced in a separate domestic abuse case in a Michigan courthouse on Monday.

Adam Beckerink had pleaded no contest to domestic abuse and violating a no-contact order back in August.

This afternoon, Beckerink was remanded into custody by the Berrien Co. Sheriff's Office. He was sentenced to 93 days in jail for both the domestic violence and contempt of court counts, but the sentences will run concurrently. The domestic violence count stems from an incident on Jan. 13, 2024.

He received credit for two days of time served.

For the interference with electronic communication count, he was sentenced to two years’ probation, which begins today.

When he is released, his curfew will be from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., seven days a week. No alcohol, no THC, and he will be subject to drug tests as part of his probation.

The backstory:

Beckerink has not been charged in connection with the death of Tracey, 36, who was found dead on Oct. 27, 2024, in the stairwell of the couple’s downtown condo building.

She also owned a home in New Buffalo, Michigan, where prosecutors said the alleged domestic abuse incident took place.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that Tracey died from multiple injuries in a fall from height. Still, the agency has not determined the manner of her death, meaning whether it was a homicide, suicide, or accident.

No charges have been filed in connection with her death.

Beckerink, a former Chicago tax attorney, was arrested on March 7 of this year on a fugitive warrant out of Michigan for the domestic abuse case. At the time, authorities said the arrest was not directly related to Tracey’s death. He was taken into custody at the same South Loop condo building where his wife was found dead.

Court records say police were twice called to Tracey's Michigan home in 2024. In one instance, she was reported to have visible injuries and accused Beckerink of assault and theft.

What they're saying:

Tracey's parents were in the courtroom during the sentencing, as were Beckerink's parents.

Tracey's mom, Monica Tracey, addressed the court during an emotional victim impact statement.

"The defendant stalked [Caitlin], brutalized her, terrorized her, physically hurt her, and psychologically isolated her from every one of her family and friends," Monica Tracey said. "The defendant ruined our beautiful our daughter. He is a monster."

Prior to being sentenced, Beckerink also addressed the court.

"I miss my wife every day. And if she were here, this would be a whole different thing because she asked several times, she wrote an email that was going to go to the prosecutor, wanting all these charges dropped. We got married, we had a great life. I don't want to speak to their family relationship, but she loved my family, and I loved her more than anything," Beckerink said.

The courtroom was filled with neighbors, friends and relatives of the Tracey family. Tracey's parents did not speak on-camera after the hearing, but a family spokesperson did.

"While today's sentencing does not deal with the circumstances of her death, it does draw a real and devastating picture of what her life was like in the months that preceded it," said Gail Pamukov, the family spokesperson.

What's next:

Beckerink will serve his sentence in the Berrien County Jail, which is located in St. Joseph, Michigan.
